Weekly 2

I read “The Dream Must be Continuous” by Joanne Mcneil and “The Male Gazed” by Kate Losse. The two articles paint an interesting female perspective on transparency, control, and privacy on the web and how it works against us and how we can benefit from it. Many of the problems in privacy pointed out by Losse are actually utilized by Mcneil and others who relish the opportunity to create fictional personas online; these problems that Losse criticizes for their transparency can be used to deceive, but only to a certain extent, like the type of mostly harmless, trivial created realities Mcneil discusses in her article. Losse discusses extremely poignant structural problems in social media, both defined by their privileged male developers and the social structure of vulnerability that women accept or are forced to accept. It was interesting reading this article as a white male because it really hit home to be honest on how mindlessly every guy objectifies women and men alike by immediately judging them on the first thing we see on their profile: their profile picture. Losse also brings up the importance of others interacting with and revealing information, specifically location of users on Facebook. This brings up the importance of paying attention to one’s entire web identity and keeping public and professional profiles and as separate as possible.
